Case Study - Jaeger Logistics - Four-to-Five Daily Scale Visits Eliminated

Jaeger Logistics says Air-Weigh on-board scales ‘changed everything’.

Solution Overview

CUSTOMER: Jaeger Logistics

LINE OF BUSINESS: Hauling grain

LOCATION: Washburn, North Dakota

IN BUSINESS SINCE: 1985

AIR-WEIGH ON-BOARD SCALE USER SINCE: 2021

The Situation

Since 1985, Randy Jaeger has line-hauled grain from his Washburn, North Dakota home base to anywhere a customer needs it. He currently owns four trucks and hauls more than 33.5 tons per run on at least four – and sometimes five – daily runs.

A downside to so much activity, though, is that Jaeger spent more than 35 years having to make at least four trips a day to an in-ground scale. Those out-of-route diversions cost him at least an hour every day – and often more if he had to spend significant time waiting in line behind other trucks who got to the scales first.

It seemed like a fact of life, until he found a way to change that.

The Answer: Air-Weigh On-Board Scales

In 2021, Jaeger bought his first on-board scale from Air-Weigh. He has since added them to two of his other trucks.

The results:

  1. Jaeger saves at least an hour each day by not having to make multiple trips to a scale that’s a mile outside his route. Before he got the Air-Weigh scales, he had to make at least four and as many as five such trips each day.
  2. Jaeger estimates the saved time is worth nearly $200 a day even after the cost of buying the scales.

WHAT THEY TOLD US ABOUT THE IMPACT OF AIR-WEIGH ON-BOARD SCALES

Quotes from Randy Jaeger, Owner

Time Given Back:

“The nearest scale for us is about a mile away, and we’d have to go in and out of that scale four times a day, and if there are a lot of trucks in line, we have to wait. It saves us an hour every day.”

The Value of an Hour:

“Truck repair shops charge us $160 to $170 an hour to repair a truck. I think the initial cost of buying a new scale is a bargain compared to that, and we’re getting that back in terms of time.”

Big Move, Big Impact:

“They’ve changed everything. That’s why these scales came in so handy for me, because now I don’t have to go out of route every time I do a run.”

Precise Readings Every Time:

“We can legally haul 33-and-a-half tons, and with the Air-Weigh scales it’s a lot safer and more convenient. You know where you’re at as soon as they finish loading.”

Quick and Easy:

“I’ve got no complaints about Air-Weigh. It’s a good system, and it’s an easy system to do.”

“We can legally haul 33-and-a-half tons, and with the Air-Weigh scales it’s a lot safer and more convenient. You know where you’re at as soon as they finish loading.”

The Conclusion

With four-to-five runs per day, Jaeger Logistics is saving an hour each day by no longer having to visit scales that are a mile out of route, and they are able to load right to the 33.5-ton limit without concern of being overweight. It’s boosting the company’s bottom line and completely changing the experience of Randy Jaeger in running the company.
