ON-BOARD SCALES FROM AIR-WEIGH BRING NEXTGEN AG LIME NEARLY $1,000 PER WEEK IN ADDITIONAL REVENUE
Time Saved by Eliminating Trips to In-Ground Scales Turned Into Additional Trips Hauling Grain for Madison, South Dakota-based Trucking Firm
Eugene, OR: Madison, South Dakota-based NextGen Ag Lime, which serves customer hauling grain via side-dump and grain trailers, reports it is earning nearly $1,000 per month in additional revenue as a result of using Air-Weigh on-board scales over the course of the past 12 months.
NextGen purchased an Air-Weigh LoadMaxx tractor scale and two LoadMaxx Plus trailer scales in August 2022. Company owner Josh Viet said NextGen wanted to eliminate time-consuming trips to in-ground scales after loading. The company also wanted to be able to see the accumulating trailer weight during the course of loading so it could be sure the trailer was loaded to the maximum weight – thus ensuring the maximum revenue per trip.
The result of the purchase has been eye-popping: Several times a week, Viet said, NextGen Ag Lime can make a third run in addition to the customary two. That adds as much as $350 per day to the company’s revenues. The benefit comes from the time saved, as well as the assurance that the trailer weight is maximized.
“Sometimes we used to go up to the scale and find we were 8,000 pounds over,” Viet said. “Now we would have to go back and get it reloaded. It might cost you five minutes, but it might cost you a half-hour. Now I can potentially get an extra load of grain in per day.”
The now-eliminated trips to in-ground scales sometimes required NextGen drivers to travel 10 to 15 miles outside their route to find a scale. Eliminating that wasted time has made it possible for the company to provide far greater service to its customers.
On occasion, Viet said, he still makes the trip to a scale to ensure the Air-Weigh scales are reporting accurate weights. When he does, he finds their performance is exceptional.
“Yesterday I had a load of 98,000 pounds, and the difference between the two was only 270 pounds, which is 0.002 percent,” Viet said. “That’s exceptional accuracy.”
Air-Weigh will be previewing a new scale model at the American Trucking Association Management Conference & Exhibition from October 14-17 at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas. Trucking companies who want to experience the same benefits NextGen Ag Lime is enjoying are encouraged to attend the show and see for themselves what Air-Weigh has coming next.
